![]() All this despite BBC Radio 1 DJ, Tony Blackburn calling ‘Pinball Wizard’ “distasteful.” Released in the US two weeks after its UK appearance, it made the Hot 100 in early April, eventually peaking too No.19 on the Billboard chart on 24th May. 2 with ‘Goodbye,’ with the great Desmond Dekker and the Aces’ ‘The Israelites’ at No. 1 and fellow Apple Records artist Mary Hopkin at No. Released on Friday 7th March, on Track Records it made the UK chart on the 22nd, climbing to No.4 on 3rd May. On 7th February 1969, The Who went into Morgan Studios, in the High Road, Willesden, far from the most prestigious recording set up in central London, and set about ‘Pinball Wizard’ with Kit Lambert as producer. I knocked a demo together and took it to the studio and everyone loved it.” I attempted the same mock baroque guitar beginning that’s on ‘I’m a Boy’ and then a bit of vigorous kind of flamenco guitar. Written in haste, Pete was unsure of its merit, saying, “It was going to be a complete dud, but I carried on. Anything with pinball in it’s fantastic.’ And so I wrote ‘Pinball Wizard,’ purely as a scam.” Pete, knowing Cohn to be a massive pinball fan, asked “So, if it had pinball in it, would you give it a decent review?’ He went, ‘Of course I would. With much of the album in the can, Pete had played some of it to his friend, the music critic Nik Cohn, who liked it, but thought it only worth four stars, rather than five. The song was, of course, part of Pete Townshend magnum opus “ Tommy”,which he and the band had begun recording in September 1968, but they had broken off from working on to tour. It was a fun exercise and we found that with a little practice it IS possible to keep a ball in play for a surprisingly long time! Of note, it was easiest to do so on the older electromechanical games that were contemporary to the album’s release modern electronic games were a lot harder due to faster ball motion, more elaborate playfield layouts, heavier cabinets, and loss of some “feel” due to electronics replacing mechanics.‘Pinball Wizard’ is one of those very special pieces of music, It’s a great rock song, but at the same time a classic song, and yet it was not as big a hit as perhaps we all remember, such is its popularity today, five decades after it was recorded. I play pinball in a league setting (we mostly despise being referred to as “wizards” though ) and we once did a “Tommy” experiment where we played blindfolded with ear plugs and cranked the Rock-Ola sufficiently loud to drown out the sound of the machines, so the tactile sensations were the only feedback during the game. I suppose a billiards, darts, or bowling metaphor could have also worked, but pinball was particularly “hip” at the time so it was the best choice I think. Pinball was about the ONLY activity at the time the record was made that could have aptly provided the desired metaphor, and as you said would have been instantly recognizable by the intended audience. So there are a whole lot of reasons and it's reductionist to rely much on Townshend's stated motivation.Ĭlick to expand. This is the best explanation thus far. And the ball is itself contained under glass and thus isolated from contact with the person playing with it. Moreover, pinball is entirely about the player interacting with the machine, so it's a great visual metaphor for Tommy's inability to interact with other humans just imagine how differently it would have registered with the listener if Nic Cohn had been a fan of air hockey, for example, so that Tommy used the machine to interact with other players. And of course it had a place in Mod culture, so Townshend's fans would have recognised it and maybe thought it was a cool ability. As a superpower for Tommy it just about falls inside the willing suspension of belief. The fact is that the sense of touch is just about plausible as a way to play pinball due to the vibrations in the machine. ![]() I'm sure there's some truth in the Nic Cohn story but Townshend should never be entirely trusted on anything he says.

Some halflings did become adventurers, but usually this was a practice taken up for reasons of necessity rather than personal drive. They took pleasure in simple things, with few aspiring to greatness in the same manner as humans. The halfling mind was practical and halflings concerned themselves with their immediate surroundings. Halflings appeared deceptively harmless, meaning they were often beyond the notice of enemies that might otherwise pose a threat to them. Because they lived in a world where they were surrounded by larger creatures, halflings tended to avoid notice, often deliberately, or at the very least, acted cordial towards the larger races. Halflings were by nature joyful and friendly in their dealings with others. Although halflings had an affinity for collecting valuables, they did not prefer to wear these on their person, instead preferring more comfortable clothing. Halfling hairstyles were often complex, with strands woven together or braided. Nearly all male halflings were incapable of growing true beards, though many had long sideburns.
